I wrote this a while back and posted it. Michael Jackson’s Man in the Mirror came on the radio the other day and made me think of this. Excerpt from a book I started writing a while back. This paragraph was about the first time I hopped a freight train with my little brother in the early 90’s. My little brother, Stevie, on the left…me on the right.
Doc I’m in from the 90’s. my little brother died in a squat fire during the making of this and it’s in there. So hard for me to watch this. No need to open old wounds…I’ll keep the good memories and try to learn from the not so good ones. There was once a time I couldn’t understand why my life was so unthinkably horrible… today I understand. That nightmare is now worth more than gold to me because I made it out and can now help others with those experiences and the fact that there is a way out. If you’re in a dark place with what seems like no way out…please don’t give up. There is hope. In 2000 I was released from prison after serving 4 years for armed robbery and the first tattoo I did was my father’s only tattoo. He wanted his Presidential Metal of Valor tattooed on him. Though it wasn’t my best work I put everything I had into that tattoo and to this day it’s one of my most cherished memories. He passed a few years after this photo and I just now found his metals I thought lost. I’m not sure why I’m posting this and sharing this part of my life…Thank you dad. I couldn’t have asked for a better father. I think he’d be proud of the guy I’m working to become today. I’m no longer that crazy drug addict felon I once was trying to run from life in any vice I could find. Today I face life head on…with a smile in my heart because I now understand…the only thing that truly matters is this very moment. Helping to transform lives is why we’re here. Love.
